In 2011, co-workers and colleagues, mostly from Berlin, and around the world, formulated the idea of establishing the “Roland Hetzer International Cardiothoracic and Vacsular Surgical Society (RHICS)”. Despite the fact that unlike in the United States or Japan scientific societies named after highly-recognized and respected individuals are uncommon in Europe, this idea quickly gained support from many colleagues and friends of Roland Hetzer and the inauguration ceremony took place in June 2011 during the 21st Congress of the late Juro Wada ́s World Society of Cardio-thoracic Surgeons in Berlin. In order to create a part of the future with the help of the RHICS, regular scientific conferences on controversial topics are planned in the form of “Expert Forum“. The highly successful 1st Expert Forum was held on October 1, 2011, just before the 25th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) in Lisbon, Portugal. Abstracts of these presentation, which were printed in an Expert Forum Newsletter, were very well-received, not only by the participants of the Forum but also by those who could not attend as well as by numerous EACTS Meeting attendees. Fortunately, Prof Zangrillo, has agreed to publish the Proceedings of the RHICS Forum in his Journal. In this issue these presentations are published as expert reviews and the authors should be congratulated for their great work. The Expert Forum in Lisbon consisted of two main sessions, one being the “Current Status of Coronary Revascularization: Onpump, Off-pump, Mini-Circuit (MECC), MIDCAB, Hybrid Procedure, TAR which is for what, and when: where are we now“ and E di to ri al First Expert Forum of the Roland Hetzer International Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Society.
